What managed server support should include
“Managed” is not a standard package. Before paying for it, define which jobs the provider owns and which jobs remain yours.
Baseline operations
Ask whether monitoring, incident response, operating-system patching, service restarts, and security hardening are included. Request clarity about coverage hours, escalation paths, and what counts as an out-of-scope task.
Backups must be specific
A useful backup commitment describes frequency, retention, storage location, restoration testing, and responsibility. A backup that cannot be restored within your recovery target is not enough for a business-critical service.
Application responsibility is separate
Server management may cover the operating system and control panel without covering WordPress, custom application code, database tuning, email deliverability, or third-party integrations. List the applications that matter before you buy.
Ask for change-control and visibility
Good managed service includes a record of major changes, alert ownership, and a practical way to reach support. You should know who approves disruptive changes and who is responsible during an incident.
